What to Expect From a Horsemanship Lesson
You will have the opportunity to learn the basics of equine knowledge.
Horsemanship skills such as catching, haltering, tying, grooming, and tacking up a horse will be involved, along with basic terminology, equine health, dietary needs, etc.
Mounted work will be focused on learning balance, coordination, trust, and confidence in equines, as well as yourself.
This all done is a slow confidence building manner. If a nervous student requires an extra slow pace program, then that is what they will receive.
Younger students will even have the option to ride in the saddle with a buddy at first, whether that be the instructor, a friend, or even a parent. This can help boost confidence as a student gets aquatinted with the feeling and movement of the horse.
A student may start out with only groundwork for their first lessons, so that they may take the route of building a strong connection of trust and communication with the horse before mounting. Others may move at a more confident pace, beginning mounted work on their first day and building their bond with the equine in that manner.
We move at the student’s needed pace to build them into the most confident rider they can be with solid foundational horsemanship.
Requirements
You must be open to learning about equines, from the ground up
Due to smaller/older horses the weight limit is set low at 150 lbs. Unmounted lessons are offered to those that do not meet this requirement. We hope to have our new addition, Spartacus, lesson ready soon in order to accommodate more individuals.
Wear long pants, jeans or riding britches are ideal. Wear closed toed shoes/boots.
Anyone under 18 is required to wear a helmet rated for equine activity. Helmets supplied.
“Barn” Rules
NO SMOKING on the premises or outside the front fence/gate.
NO Alcohol or Drugs on the premises.
NO dogs, or pets, on the premises.
PARKING please park in the designated parking area and in a manner that does not interfere with anyone’s ability to move his/her vehicle.
PLEASE keep on the premise/property. Do not park off of the property or allow children to play on neighbors play equipment. The property is beyond the long, tall, wooden fence, not before. If you are unsure where the property starts and ends please ask the instructor for assistance.
DO NOT FEED the horses without prior consent from the instructor. Jake has a special low sugar diet due to a genetic disorder. Chief has no teeth due to his age and can choke on solid food. He does however love watermelon and blackberries. Never feed strange horses! Equines cannot throw up. When they eat something they are unable to process they can colic, (intestinal blockage), of which can be fatal!
DO NOT INTERACT with the horses if the instructor is not in the vicinity upon your arrival. Please wait for the instructor’s consent.
PLEASE clean up after yourself, leaving no trash, and putting away all equipment tack in designated places.
PLEASE respect the instructor and the horses. Listen to directions and be mindful around the horses.
